Sections 13-24
This week, I continued to read Seth Godin’s book Stop Stealing Dreams: What is School for? for my Learning and Technology Class. It is still available for a free download here. While I am still enjoying the thought provoking ideas and opinions, I am finding myself agreeing less and questioning more.
In section 15, Godin criticizes students for settling on being the assistant to a famous person, and not dreaming to be the famous person. In my opinion, the assistant would be the better position, because I would not like the attention that comes with being famous nor would I want to be under constant spotlight from media. To me, the assistant sounds like a person who gets to do all the fancy fun things, works hard, and avoids the spotlight; all wins in my book.
I agree with section 17 about reinventing school, for the most part. I believe that school should be open book, open note, all the time and cooperation should be a big focus. We do not need students to focus on memorizing information, since in today’s world the internet offers an abundance of information and is so easily accessible. I do believe, however, that we need to help students understand the difference between opinion and fact.
The last reflection I would like to make is about the “Cut School Taxes” bumper sticker that Godin hates. While I don’t think cutting school taxes is a good idea, I do think the taxpayers should be aware of how and where their school tax dollars are spent. As a former auditor, I find the amount of money wasted on unimportant things fascinating.
